Oh man, the last week in Washington went by like a second. We did a lot more fun pool stuff, like dropping all our equipment to the bottom of the pool (including mask), swimming down, put it on again and then surfaced. It would probably have been a lot easier if I didn´t freak out and remembered that yes, it is actually possible to open your eyes under water. It wasn´t pretty, but I got it done. Eventually.
We also focused a lot on Dive First Aid and Dive Rescue Management the last few days, which I think is a very important aspect of diving (and it´s not because I´m a medical student), However, that didn´t stop me from straining a thigh muscle just before the in-water rescue training! Fantastic timing. It was alright though, I just had to take some precautions. I did manage to save my buddy, and that´s what counts.
During the weekend we finally had some energy to get out of our apartment (you might not believe it, but having theory lessons and pool sessions every day is pretty exhausting), and I got to see some more of beautiful Washington, DC. After the last day of pool sessions we invited all the course participants to a BBQ at our place (on the roof top), which was awesome. We had no idea, but one of the guys living on 9th floor had arranged a party with a caribbean live band on the roof top that very night. Just to get to know his neighbours. We felt a bit awkward about the whole thing, since we had invited people over – and we didn´t want to crash his party. Luckily, he didn´t see any problem with us bringing our friends, so we could enjoy live band music and an awesome BBQ that night. All in all a good closure on my stay in Washington, because now I´m off to Key Largo, Florida!!
