When I arrived in Malta, I discovered my suitcase had broken. My suitcase mirrored the tired Lucy attempting to awkwardly ‘roll’ it out of the airport. The few days leading up to my Malta trip were a whirlwind, juggling my mid-year DEMA film and a hefty chunk of theory for my Instructor Development Course.

MID YEAR FILM!

Jumping into the Malta ocean for some diving with Marcus and the ABC Diving team was the perfect reset. I now have a new suitcase and left Malta refreshed. Also, as a happy little dive instructor!

A big thanks to Marcus and the ABC Diving Team for kindly hosting me for my Instructor Development Course and Instructor Exam. Their professionalism, mixed with a warm, person-centred approach, made the process of becoming a dive instructor an enjoyable and knowledge-packed experience. Marcus, your enthusiasm for diving and teaching is infectious.

The IDC was an intense yet incredibly enjoyable course. I learnt how to master teaching techniques, navigate tricky dive scenarios, hone my dive skills all while deepening my theoretical knowledge. The successful completion of an IDC not only allows you to teach diving globally but also opens doors to other exciting opportunities.

The IDC allowed me to form close bonds with fellow divers and provided the perfect environment to grow confidence in my own diving and teaching skills. It turns out I actually really enjoy teaching, especially when it allows me to spend extra time in the water!

I set out on the IDC with the main goal of enhancing my dive and drysuit skills. But I left with so much more. Beyond technical improvements, I discovered a profound joy in sharing knowledge and guiding others on their learning journey. It’s fair to say that my broken suitcase was a small sacrifice for the transformative experience of my IDC in Malta! Thank you to Marcus and the ABC Diving team for having me.

A huge thank you to Rolex, the Our World Underwater Scholarship Society, Divers Alert Network and my equipment sponsors Fourth ElementSuuntoHalcyon Dive SystemsReef Photo and Video and Nauticam. Their continued support, along with the dedication of countless volunteers and hosts, has transformed this incredible opportunity into a reality. I’m excited about the adventures that await in the coming year.
