This year, in Danish city Århus, there was held a joint world championship of AIDA and CMAS in freediving. Invited by Lars Kirkegaard, Scholarship’s coordinator for Scandinavia, to join the media team (for which he was responsible), as an underwater cameraman.
The competition site was a 50m long swimming pool in large sports complex, which was of almost exclusive use for organizers for these few days of event. When I arrived, many teams were already there – couple of days before opening were reserved for training of athletes who were to compete. They were from all over the world – Europe, States, Japan, New Zealand, South America, including such famous freedivers as Carlos Coste or Natalia Molchanova. A polish team wasn’t missing – I was very glad to meet them! There was plenty of things to do around – organizers planned to have everyday report videos posted on youtube, there were live cameras to be put underwater, there were videos that judges needed to review the performances later… But it was all fun, and I learned so much more about the making of video (thanks to Dan Burton for mentoring!) – our production cycle was closing in few hours from shooting to posting online, not in weeks as I used to think of it! I met lots of great people too, and got some crash courses – such as from Alan Barber of NoTanx on freediving (and swimming as such) in monofin.
